Between 110,000 and 200,000 people attended a march held in Barcelona on Saturday to demand freedom for the nine pro-independence leaders jailed. Under the slogan “Neither prison nor exile, we want you home”, the protest included the country’s two top authorities, president Quim Torra and parliament speaker Roger Torrent and it was marked by this week’s significant decision by German justice: the court in Schleswig-Holstein hearing the case for the extradition of Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, demanded by Spain, only agreed to extradite him for the crime of misuse of public funds, rejecting that there had been violence in the independence process and, therefore, not supporting the Spanish charges of rebellion for which the nine pro-independence politicians have been held in prison for many months.
The march started in Barcelona’s city center at 7pm and finished outside the historical La Model prison, closed a year ago after 113 years up and running.
